Wikispace

     Wikispace enables students to do collaborative writing project in the class.

     First, teacher introduces students to wikispace and prewriting. Second, students write initial writing  in groups. And then students revises the first draft. Finally, students proofread their group report for grammatical and lexical errors, and publish their writings.

     Group writing work using wikispace is effective in motivating and improving students' writing skill. Because students do their group writing worka for the first time, students' initial response is maybe slow. But after the couple of days, students will participate actively, because students can simply add their ideas for their group works and they feel sense of belonging. So finally the students are motivated and excited about the writing projects. Moreover, this wikispace page enbles all students to participate their writing projects and do their group works collaboratively, so students' final writing can be more perfect. For this process, students can learn cooperation and improve their writing skill.

The little prince ended up his long travel.
He decided to go back to his rose.
However, the little prince realized that she was too far away from the prince.
He missed the rose so much, but he lose the way to come back home.
He whispered himself,
"It wasn't supposed to be that far away."

This site is online talk group site. Anybody all over the world can use this site. You can record your thought or opinion and deliver it through this site. Also if you want to know about other users thought or opinion, you can make a new talk groups and discussions.

 

This site has two advantages in learning English.

 

First, learners can meet various English. Because this online talk group is accessible to the people all over the world, learners can communicate with people from other countries and listen to various style of English. So learners can get a variety of intonation, pronunciation, and voice and be familiar with speaking and listening English.

 

Second, this site help to stimulate the learners' zone of proximal development (ZPD) that is stated by Vygotsky. Vygotsky stressed that learners have a specific zone including higher level than theirs ability. Also he emphasized scaffolding that plays a role of an assistant to improve learners' ability. Utilizing various materials helping students' learning and observing other learners' learning can be all scaffolding. In this point, this site also can be scaffolding for learners. Because learners can be stimulated from recordings of other users that have a higher level, not too perfect, and can improve their capacities belonging in their ZPD.

 

So using this site, learners can improve their English skills.

   This internet dictionary site includes vocabulary that considered all ages and levels. In addition, this site has a function that is helpful for teachers and students. The function is that teachers can make various activities using vocabularies which students already memorized.

 

   First, let's look into that the site divides vocabulary depending upon ages. The "WILD(Wordsmyth Illustrated Learner's Dictionary)" is dictionary for young readers. Because this dictionary utilizes pictures(visual materials), teachers can convey vocabulary to students easily and effectively. Also, the dictionary offers relevant vocabularies that belong to one topic (like animals, hospital...), not too many vocabularies imprudently. So students can learn vocabulary more effectively along with each situation, subject, and place. The "Word Explorer" is children's dictionary for the upper elementary grades. Because this dictionary has vocabulary that is more higher level than WILD, learners can master vocabulary in series. Moreover, like WILD, this dictionary offers relevant vocabularies that belong to one topic. So the dictionary will be able to be used effectively in class situation that specific learning topics are given.

 

   Second, let's look into that the site divides vocabulary depending upon students' level. This site offers "Comprehensive Dictionary Suite" classified in Beginner's Dictionary, Intermediate Dictionary, and Advanced Dictionary in the left side. This function can be very effective in a class situation when teachers teach vocabulary to students who have various english levels.

 

   Finally, let's look into a variety of activities provided by this site. Teachers and students can make vocabulary note. Because the vocabulary note can be printed, students can conveniently memorize vocabulary regardless of time and place. Also teachers can make puzzles and quiz. The puzzle activity can attract student attention and remind students of vocabulary which students already memorized. So puzzle activity can check students' vocabulary, beyond memorizing, and this point is useful for students to learn vocabulary. Because quiz activity can test students' accomplishment, it is surely necessary in class.

 

   Therefore, this site can help students to learn vocabulary more effectively and easily in class, and be used in various class situations regardless of leaners' age and level.
